Haley Zega — Speaker | Actor | Survivor

A Story of Perseverance and the Power of Community.

A little girl lost and alone as hundreds desperately searched deep in the wilds of the Ozark hills.

"If you’ve ever heard the phrase 'kindness is free,' I’ll tell you right now, I don’t believe that.
Every single person who came to help me and my family...they offered a massive kindness, and it cost them something.
For some it was emotional energy, or time or gas money, or lost wages.
But they did it anyway.
They put positive energy into this world and I love them for that."

-Haley Zega

Rescued. Resilient. Remarkable.

In 2001, six-year-old Haley Zega disappeared into the rugged wilderness of Newton County, Arkansas, last seen on a remote trail near massive bluffs overlooking the Buffalo National River.

For three days, the dense forest of Cave Mountain held a question no one could answer:

How could a little girl simply vanish without a trace?

The search that followed became one of the largest in Arkansas history — hundreds of volunteers, law enforcement officers, Arkansas Army National Guard members, friends, neighbors, and strangers combing miles of dense Ozark terrain. Helicopters circled. Dogs tracked. Prayers rose. Hope flickered but never failed.

And then, against staggering odds, she was found alive.

More than two decades later, Haley's story still reverberates.

Not only as a mystery of survival — but as a testament to perseverance, grace in the midst of uncertainty, and the extraordinary strength of a community that refused to give up.

Today, Haley Zega speaks about resilience, memory, spirit, recognizing one's strength, and what it means to grow up after being the subject of intense curiosity. A graduate of Pace University’s Acting program in New York City, she brings both lived experience and professional training to every stage she steps onto.

Her story is revisited in Cave Mountain: A Disappearance and a Reckoning in the Ozarks by critically acclaimed novelist Benjamin Hale, released nationally in March 2026.

But this is not only a recounting of what happened to Haley, a tiny kindergartener lost in the deepest woods.

It is also about what happened after...and long before.
