Honoring Those Who Searched, Served, and Stood Alongside
When Haley Zega disappeared into the rugged wilderness of Newton County, Arkansas, a family crisis quickly became a community mobilization.
The forests of Cave Mountain were steep, dense, and unforgiving. Hours stretched all too quickly into days. Uncertainty weighed heavily over the Ozark National Forest and communities surrounding it.
Yet, Haley’s family was never alone.
Hundreds of volunteers, search and rescue teams, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, neighbors, and strangers stepped forward. They walked miles through thick, unyielding forest. They created search grids. They coordinated aircraft and canine teams. They brought supplies, equipment, and resolve. They searched through exhaustion, heat, and fear.
The effort became one of the largest search operations in Arkansas history — a testament not only to urgency, but to collective courage.
This page exists to acknowledge and honor the individuals and organizations whose presence made a difference.
A Special Tribute: The Morgan Nick Foundation
Among those who stood beside Haley’s family during the search was Colleen Nick, founder of the Morgan Nick Foundation.
Colleen’s daughter, Morgan Nick, was abducted in Arkansas at the age of six and has never been recovered. In the face of profound loss, Colleen established the Morgan Nick Foundation to promote child safety, provide prevention education, and support families navigating the unthinkable reality of a missing child.
When Haley disappeared, Colleen traveled to Newton County and remained on site for two days. She served as a steady and compassionate liaison between law enforcement, search coordinators, media representatives, and Haley’s family — offering guidance drawn from experience no parent wishes to possess.
Her presence brought clarity, advocacy, and calm in a moment defined by uncertainty...and a bond of friendship that continues today.
Today, the Morgan Nick Foundation continues its work across Arkansas and beyond, equipping communities with safety resources and supporting families in crisis.

The Extraordinary Power of Collective Resolve
Survival stories are often framed as individual endurance.
But the search for Haley Zega in 2001 stands as a reminder that survival is often communal.
She was found because hundreds chose to search.
She was brought home because a community refused to surrender to despair.
The Cave Mountain search remains a testament to what can happen when people act swiftly, compassionately, and together.
This page is offered in enduring gratitude for every person and organization who stepped into uncertainty to help bring a child safely home.
